Professor Tim Higgins has been a Gracie Barra student at our O’Fallon/LSL location for 10 years, and started training shortly after turning 50 years old! Professor Tim tells us about his journey to black belt and what inspired him to stick with it. “[I’ve] wanted to learn jiu jitsu since I was a kid and saw it in the back of a comic book,” Higgins said. “I never had a chance to do it where I lived. Then 10 years ago we were looking for some martial arts to enroll my son in and I started noticing this place called Gracie Barra that had only opened a few months ago by me.” After enrolling his son, Higgins was intrigued by the classes and decided to try it out. Before he knew it, he was hooked! Higgins had had some previous jiu jitsu training while in the Marines, and when he

Coach Nick Barrett

My name is Nick Barrett, I am 20 years old, and I have been training jiu jitsu for 12 years. I began jiu jitsu as an 8 year old trying to find something to do because baseball was out of season. I ended up finding the passion that would change my life! I was always a competitive kid, so I started doing competitions right away. Doing jiu jitsu tournaments is truly what taught me how to fail, learn, grow from the failure, and become better from it. When I was 12 years old I began to help coach kids classes and quickly realized that my true passion was teaching jiu jitsu. With the support of my parents, I started homeschooling throughout high school in order to pursue a career competing and teaching jiu jitsu. Thanks to God and many people supporting me, this decision led to achieving my dream of

Spotlight of Professor Dominic. I was born and raised in MO, I grew up with both my parents, and younger brother and sister. I’ve always been into playing sports, roughhouse activities and being conscious and curious of how to live a healthy lifestyle as long as I can remember. I grew up playing ice hockey every season from the age of 7-18. At age 16 I began training at an mma gym near my house at the time just as a new hobby. At 17 I began training under Prof Mike at Gracie Barra and it quickly developed into my passion. I was fortunate to have amazing mentors and role models here who inspired me to start training nearly everyday and a lot of times more than once a day. From there, I began competing in tournaments, teaching, and pursuing jiu jitsu as not only as a lifestyle and hobby,
