Learning Judo

Judo classes teach the Japanese art of judo: a defense-focused type of unarmed grappling sport. In judo, one uses indirect force to subdue their opponent. Judo is made up of a series of throws, submission holds, and take-downs.

As we teach in our judo classes, the focus in the sport is to overcome your opponent, not through brute force, but rather skillfully and tactfully. Timing and strategy are key in becoming a judo champion. Students study in judo classes to learn how to use indirect force and how to put their opponent’s strength to use for their own gain.

In our judo classes, students learn the judo fundamentals: throws and holds. These are grappling techniques that beautifully compliment the skills we teach in other martial arts such as Brazilian jiu jitsu. One of the most important, most fundamental things you will learn as a student in judo classes is how to fall. Because throws are a large part of the sport of judo, a student must learn breakfalls techniques. Mastering breakfalls make a judo student better able to throw their opponent and defend against attacks.

Reasons to Take Judo Classes

Judo is a distinguished and serious art. However, that doesn’t mean that judo classes must always be solemn to honor the sport. Our judo classes are fun, friendly, challenging, and led by professional martial artists. We offer classes for all ages, from young children to teens and adults. Our classes are structured for the needs and requirements of every age group and tailored to give individual attention to our dedicated students.

Judo classes are a way to add structure and physical activity in a person’s life. Learning and practicing judo improves a student’s physical, mental, and emotional health and interpersonal skills. Through judo classes, one gains:

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Stamina
  • Physical fitness
  • Overall health
  • Energy
  • Posture
  • Self esteem
  • Confidence
  • Emotional regulation
  • Respect
  • Focus
  • Mindfulness
  • Character

Beyond these many internal benefits, judo is a practical skill to familiarize yourself with. In a dangerous situation, you can apply what you learn in your judo classes as self-defense, to protect yourself against your attacker. In addition, the skills you learn in judo classes are fundamental to becoming a competitive martial arts athlete. Competitive judo and competitive Brazilian jiu jitsu require a mastering of the fundamentals one learns in judo classes.
