With over 35 years of martial arts experience, Professor Mike Buckels is a highly accomplished and respected instructor, holding 8 degrees of black belt across various martial arts disciplines. He holds a 4th-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the esteemed Professor Marcio Feitosa.
Mike’s martial arts journey began at 17, in 1989, with traditional martial arts (Kuk Sul Hapkido), initially as a way to stay in shape. As a professional musician, he found that martial arts was the perfect balance to his career. “Martial arts felt like the perfect balance for my career as a musician, and it quickly became a deep passion for me,” Mike says.
His path took a pivotal turn after watching the first UFC in 1993. By 1995, he was in Southern California, immersed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, and studying under some of the most renowned figures in the sport, including Carlos Gracie Jr. During his time in California, Mike became one of the most respected members of the BJJ community and earned the honor of being the first American Technical Director for the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF)2007-2011.
While competition was never his main focus, Mike’s competitive career from 1989 to 2004 includes an impressive 60-80 podium finishes and titles at local, state, national, and international competitions in various martial arts.
What truly drives Professor Mike is watching his students succeed. Whether it’s helping someone overcome personal challenges, coaching law enforcement and military professionals, guiding athletes to victory in BJJ competitions, or walking down the aisle with one of his pro MMA fighters, Mike finds immense joy in supporting others’ growth. “I love the opportunity to bring out the best in someone,” he shares.
